What is in a Name?
— Olu Taiwo
Since the beginning of time God demonstrated His ability to call. When He created Adam He brought the animals to Adam to see what he would call them. Adam did not fail in that responsibility. For God had endowed him with the ability to call. He successfully named all the animals without faltering. Even till this day men continue to give names to anything they “create”. Hence, we have “television,” “microwave”, “computer” etc.
When God was going to introduce His Son into the world, an announcement was made:
“For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be CALLED Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6 NIV).
This announcement of Jesus was a testimony to who He was and told of His future.
Wonderful Counselor: Jesus is wisdom personified.
Mighty God: He is Creator and sustainer of the universe
Everlasting Father: He is the Eternal Progenitor and nourisher of all things
Prince of Peace: He is the Mediator between God and man.
The Bible is a manual for life. Look at it and you will discover that it tells us who we are.
We are not nameless faces floating in the boundaries of time.
We are children of God CALLED by His name…in Him we are significant. We have a destiny on this planet. We have a purpose to fulfill. And with the help of God, we will fulfill it!
What is in a name? Do you know what your name stands for? Does it say something about who you are? What do you call yourself? Ideally, your name should testify about who you really are. And in case you are not happy with the name your parents gave you, God calls you:
Peculiar, joint heir, righteous, King, Son, Daughter, priest, body of Christ, Victorious etc.
God has bestowed His goodness upon you. You will live up to your name! You will rise up and face the challenges of life. You will demonstrate that you are the head and not the tail. You will walk in newness of life. You will be victorious.
Why? because that is what God calls you.
